Remaining a good digital citizen

[ad_1]

Rebecca Stanisic Now is a great time to feel about how we are developing, curating and partaking with on line content material.

Digital Citizen Working day is October 25, 2023, and Media Literacy Week is October 23-27, 2023. MediaSmarts is focusing on spreading positivity on line as a component of their campaign.

As electronic buyers ourselves, I imagine lots of of us want a little much more positivity to arrive from on the web interactions. As dad and mom, we want our young children to be aware of the actuality of becoming on the internet (there is great, and there is bad), whilst also acknowledging that ‘toxic positivity’ isn’t likely to be the remedy possibly.

It leaves us questioning ‘how do we make the internet a better position for all of us?’ The reality is, I do not have the solution. I don’t even have the commence of a person. But I do assume we all have a duty to be much better digital citizens.

I individually can see the constructive effects getting on-line has on my lifetime and job. The connections, local community, and options have been seemingly endless. But I can also acknowledge the web as a position that drives anxiousness (like my own), misinformation and detest.

Navigating these waters is no uncomplicated task, and for our youngsters, it may perhaps come to feel even a lot more overwhelming than ever to be on line.

I appreciated this list from MediaSmarts about techniques all of us can lead to a a lot more good spot on line:

Constructive means to have interaction on-line as a digital citizen can involve:

  • Pushing back again against detest and prejudice online and reporting it
  • Sharing a type or good comment
  • Sending a amusing message to brighten someone’s day
  • Making your voice listened to about an concern you care about (in a constructive way)
  • Amplifying marginalized voices
  • Checking reputable resources before sharing info
  • Respecting other people’s privateness when sharing issues online

If we seem at this record and assume about how we are using our have room on the internet, are we currently employing some of these ideas? Are our children? (I know mine have the ‘funny information/meme’ issue included if our family group chat is any sign).

If not, it could be a very good time to reflect on what that is and how we can alter that.

This week, during Media Literacy Week, and just about every 7 days outside of it, we need to take into consideration our function as electronic citizens, and how what we set out into the planet, in a positive and/or significant way, can have an effects.

And of training course, we really should retain sharing memes.
